Here's How It Works...
If you have never been to our facility and are wondering how it works, please, don't feel intimidated. We truly do offer services for everyone, of all ages and abilities.
During our normal business hours we are open to the public. This means you and all your friends. Anyone can walk into Vertical Extreme and climb during open session - no reservation required.
If you want to climb on the tall roped walls, you'll need to bring a partner or parent to manage the safety ropes for you. This person is called a belayer. While you are welcome to climb at Vertical Extreme without any instruction you do need to take a belay training instruction from one of our staff in order to belay to our gym's safety standards.
If you already know how to work the ropes you don't need to take the class, you simply must pass the belay test. You need to be a minimum of 14 years old to belay at Vertical Extreme.
NOTE: There are times during our regularly scheduled hours that we include everything for children, including belayers - see our Youth Programs page to learn more.
So the next question is, how does one take the belay test?
FYI- Belaying/holding the safety ropes for another climber is more about coordination and maturity than physical ability. We do belay training on a first come first served basis. It normally takes anywhere from 10-30 minutes. Reservations are not required.
The belay instruction fee is a one-time only fee of $15 which includes a harness rental for the day. One-time means that one payment is all you ever need to pay for the belay training even if you need to be re-instructed.
If you are just belaying and not climbing, you need not pay the admission fee. The next time you come to belay only, you simply need to rent a harness for the day - a cost of $3.
Vertical Extreme keeps a record of who has paid for belay lessons and who is belay certified through our computer database system, for easy check-in when you come to climb. Again, we DO offer programs and group rates which include staff belayers, so make sure to continue reading if you are not interested in belaying for the kids and climbers in your group. If you are coming with a scheduled group or party, note that we provide belayers and or staff instructors to help belay.
Also, our facility sports 3,000 square feet of bouldering. Bouldering does not require ropes and has a height limit of approximately 12 feet. Participants can practice their skills without a partner while staying close to the ground. Bouldering = no ropes and no belay partner.
It is very important that all climbers must have a Reale Adventures, Inc. Assumption of Risk Form [PDF] completed before they can participate in any activity at Vertical Extreme. Climbers under 18 must have a form completed by their parent.
